NASCAR Lessons in Leadership & Grit

NASCAR Lessons in Leadership & Grit

This morning, we had the privilege of hearing from Dale Jarrett—NASCAR Cup Series Champion and 2014 Hall of Fame driver. His no-nonsense wisdom hit home, especially as someone who admits he wasn’t always the most talented or best equipped—but outworked and outsmarted the competition.

Here are my key takeaways from his talk that apply far beyond the track:

  1. Your actions matter—people will follow your lead, even if you’re headed in the wrong direction.
  2. Keep going—resilience beats talent when talent gives up.
  3. Never stop improving—get up, show up, and keep fighting.
  4. Outwork the rest—hard work creates the edge.
  5. Stay open to opportunity—often comes from unexpected places.

For Dale, that meant embracing wind tunnel testing and personal fitness—gaining those crucial 1–2 tenths of a second that made the difference.

It’s a reminder: you don’t have to be the best—just the one who’s always learning, grinding, and finding new ways to win.
