Oregon became the first state of the United States to make Labor Day an official public holiday in 1887. Thirty U.S. states officially celebrated Labor Day before it became an official federal holiday in 1894. Today, all 50 U.S. states, DC, and the US territories now observe the holiday, observed on the first Monday of September.
